The Culture Club : Art, Myth and Creative Reflections
The Culture Club is a new monthly series for everyone curious about art, culture, and creativity -and who would like to share their thoughts and reflections in English within a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. Each gathering will focus on a theme and begin with a short presentation illustrated by artworks, stories, and cultural examples. Together we will explore ideas that connect different cultures and historical periods - from ancient myths and artefacts to literature, as well as modern art, music, and film. Through these images and stories, we will uncover the threads of connection that bind human life, and discover how art and myth can inspire fresh perspectives on our own experiences.
Session 1 in September): Hands: Touch, Creation, and Connection
Our hands are storytellers. In this session, we will explore the symbolism of hands across different cultures and artistic traditions. Through images, stories, and film, we will reflect on the role of hands in human history and in our daily lives.
Session 2 in October: Trees and Nature: Roots, Branches, and Growth
Trees stand as ancient witnesses of human history.
This session explores the many layers of meaning that trees and nature hold in myth, art, poetry, and film. We will consider how different cultures have turned to trees to express ideas of life, death, growth, and renewal.
Session 3 in November: The Loom of Life: Weaving, Threads, and Time
Weaving has long served as a powerful metaphor for connection and destiny, from the Greek Fates to medieval tapestries and modern literature.
In this session, we explore how threads and patterns in art and myth reflect the interwoven nature of human experience. Through selected examples from ancient Mesopotamia, Greek mythology, and later artistic traditions, we will consider how artists and storytellers have engaged with ideas of time, continuity and change -and how these themes resonate across cultures.
