This semester we will be reading ‘Old Filth’ by Jane Gardam (pub. 2004). It is the story of Sir Edward Feathers (Old Filth), a successful lawyer and then judge, now retired. The death of his wife releases buried memories, which he revisits as the narrative moves back and forth between his childhood and formative years and the present.

‘Old Filth’ is both the moving and often humorous portrait of a lovable character and the account of a bygone era.

This is the perfect course for all those who enjoy speaking English. We will discuss topics of general interest, current events and literature as well as practising conversational skills in pairs and small groups. Our focus will also be on activating grammar and vocabulary and discovering new ways of expressing ourselves.
